Against Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer – the facts are startling!
Each year in the UK more than 45,500 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer (that is more than 125 women a day!) and just under 12,000 women and 90 men will die of the disease. In the last ten years, female breast cancer incidence rates in the UK have increased by 6% and it is now the second most common cancer in the UK. However, we know that a more active lifestyle reduces breast cancer risk so taking part in the Women’s Duathlon is important.
What Against Breast Cancer is doing?
Our unique combination of research looks at three main areas:
Diet & Lifestyle. Our study is the largest of its kind in the world and is taking place in over 50 hospitals in the UK. In 2010 we expect to be able to start providing evidence from this study to enable clinicians to recommend the best dietary and lifestyle practices for breast cancer survival.
Biochemistry. The recent discovery of a cancer marker is very exciting and will enable us to develop a blood or urine test for early detection of aggressive ‘secondary’ cancers in breast cancer patients immunology. We are looking for ways to stimulate the low levels of immunity found in breast cancer patients and use this information to produce a vaccine.
How you can help?
None of this research can continue without the help of our supporters. You fund the research team and all their associated costs including laboratories, freezers, equipment and study materials. We receive no government funding for this vital work. Every £1 you raise gets us closer to a future free of breast cancer
Ovarian Cancer Action
Ovarian cancer kills 12 women a day in the UK. Survival rates, which have not improved in 20 years, are low at 38%. Most women cannot name any of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, and mistakenly believe it can be detected by a smear test.
Ovarian Cancer Action is the leading ovarian cancer charity in the UK. It is dedicated to improving women’s chances of surviving ovarian cancer by raising awareness of the disease, by funding research at the Ovarian cancer action Research Centre and other research facilities in the UK, and by giving a voice to women affected by it.
